Purple is a vegemite of a colour, dividing people into camps of love or hate, but with this year's Pantone colour being revealed as Radiant Orchid - a warm brew of fuchsia, rose and purple - a universal appeal just may have been found.
Pantone is famous for it's Colour Matching System - thin cardboard strips with variants of colours - used by graphic designers, art directors, textile and fashion designers and paint and print companies.
Since 1999 they have chosen a 'colour of the year', setting trends across many disciplines including fashion, art, interior, beauty.
Not only do Pantone study colour combinations for harmony in design, they also pay attention to the effects of colour on human thought processes, emotions and physical reactions. They match their colour of the year choices with sociological considerations.
Last year, continuing global financial/political and environmental upheavals were offset by Emerald, giving us feelings of well-being, balance and prosperity. Now with Radiant Orchid, we have an 'invitation to innovation' - expanding creativity and originality - qualities that will help us all move forward. It is said to 'bloom with confidence and magical warmth'.
We noticed purple as a colour trend in Paris at last year's Maison & Objet trade fair. There is something decidedly luxurious about it, as it has undertones of extreme femininity, sensuality and spirituality.
In terms of interiors, we think Radiant Orchid is best used in paint and accent pieces such as soft furnishings. It adds life to greys, beige and taupe and compliments olive and forest greens for a moody vibe. It creates a bright and happy atmosphere with turquoise, teal and light yellows.
In fashion, we are loving touches of purple in scarves, statement jackets and jewellery.
Here's a selection of what's instore for that 2014 vibe.
